It doesn't matter where you go. All Spain around you will find churros. At the coffee bars or at specific churros stands (Churrerías) during feasts. And not only during the winter, but also during summer. However, those fried dough pieces are delicious during winter time, especially with a cup of hot chocolate. There are classic places in which you can enjoy them along with hot chocolate almost in every city. But very few people know that churros are extremely easy to do (hot chocolate as well). So why not to make them at home for your family or friends, so you can impress them with this treat?
Although some recipes add a bit of oil or butter to the dough, I preferred to share the classic basic one. The dough only contains water and flour in equal amount and a pinch of salt. The trick to get nice crunchy but still soft churros is to fry them in very hot oil. If the oil is not warm enough, they will take longer to get a nice golden-brown color and will be taugh. Try to fry them for a very short time at high temperature, and you will enjoy a fantastic moment. If you need more amount of churros, just simply increase the amounts of flour and water accordingly, as they will always be the same proportion (1 to 1). I hope you try them out and don't hesitate to comment below your experience. Enjoy!
Ingredients for about 25 churros:
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of wheat flour
- a pinch of salt
- vegetable oil
- cast sugar
Preparation time: 20-25 min (depending on the amount)
Directions:
1- Bring the water to a boil with a pinch of salt. Once it is boiling, turn off the heat and add all at once the flour. Combine until getting a homogeneous dough. Transfer onto a plate and let it cool a bit.
2 - Put the dough into a plastic piping bag using a star-shape tip to get the classic churros shape. Press and get the churros on a plate. Cut them with the tips of your fingers or with a knife.
3 - Heat a large amount of oil. Once it is very hot, fry the churros until they get a nice golden-brown color. Put on a plate with paper towel to remove the excess oil and sprinkle some cast sugar to taste. Enjoy while still warm.
